At Atria, “People Belong Together” is a mantra often used to describe our social model approach to serving residents, emphasizing connection, camaraderie, and shared experiences.

Recently, Sanela Graziose, Chief Marketing Officer, answered questions about how this philosophy extends to Atria’s workforce to create an atmosphere where both residents and employees thrive.

Why is the sense of belonging so important in the workplace?

Belonging isn’t just about feeling comfortable at work; it’s about knowing that you’re valued. Atria is unique because our workplace is someone’s home – vibrant communities full of activity each day. And our employees help create that atmosphere.

Is a culture of belonging cultivated, or can it happen organically?

Some aspects are organic, but others require intention as a company. We know from the feedback from our Employee Engagement Survey that a positive and productive relationship with your direct supervisor is an important part of belonging. We emphasize holding regular one-on-one conversations with supervisors where employees can direct the agenda.

We’re committed to investing in our employees’ futures through tuition reimbursement, training and development opportunities, and Atria U, our internal training module. We want support that extends beyond the present to include where someone’s headed. Belonging means thinking long term.

What contributes to your own sense of belonging at Atria?

For me, being heard is essential. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to work with leaders who listen as carefully as they speak. Knowing that my voice and contributions are valued makes Atria a place where I’m excited to keep growing.

I’m also someone who really cherishes personal connections at work. I love celebrating birthdays, work anniversaries, and milestones. My coworkers can tell you that my favorite way to show appreciation is by sharing starter plants from my houseplant collection. It’s become a bit of an obsession – these plants are slowly taking over our offices.

What effect does a culture of belonging have on the overall resident experience?

Residents and their families tell us time and again that the relationships they build with our staff are what make their experience truly special. The deep connections that form in our communities always inspire me. When residents see familiar faces serving them in the dining room or leading their favorite yoga class, it helps them feel like they belong at Atria. That’s why fostering the same sense of belonging among our staff is so important to our mission.
